Glenville State College will begin offering several degree program options — available fully online — beginning in fall 2018. This new initiative provides more opportunities for working adults and commuting students to pursue college degrees.
The following programs will be available online through GSC: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass Music, Associate of Science in Business, Associate of Science in Criminal Justice, Associate of Arts in General Studies, and a Certificate in Bluegrass.
Glenville State has offered online classes for many years, but this is the first time that the institution has offered any degree program completely online.
“We know that there are many working adults that have college credit and wish to finish their degrees and/or want to enhance their work and promotion opportunities,” said Glenville State College President Dr. Tracy Pellett.
“By focusing our efforts on high-demand degrees in Business and Criminal Justice we expect to have immediate career impact on those students that enroll. In addition, our General Studies option provides students with previous college credit a chance to complete a degree in a flexible manner that meets their lifestyle and family needs. Our Bluegrass certificate and degree options are for those students interested in learning and engaging in the bluegrass culture and music scene without coming physically to campus,” Pellett added.
These fully online programs at Glenville State are designed to contribute toward the state’s goal of increasing college degree production and attract more potential students. Many students want to complete their degrees at home for financial reasons that include work or family obligations.
“Not everyone can just pack up and move to a residential campus, so we’re looking for ways that we can reach out to where those students are,” said Dr. Gary Morris, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Keeping non-traditional students in mind, Glenville State College administrators and faculty began looking for ways to better meet their educational needs. This past year, GSC has been on a fact-finding mission at community colleges and has received input from community representatives to get ideas about the sorts of degrees and options that are most needed by businesses and employers in those communities. This resulted in the development of several fully online degree program offerings.
“We are continuing to look at what the demands are of the community and businesses and how we can connect with that and expand our reach,” Pellett said.
